EVE Summit

July 3-7 2023, Max Planck Institute, Berlin

GARI Founder Michal Koran and Executive Director Odessa Primus were invited to take part in the EVE Summit in Berlin. Also in Berlin were N100 speakers Tim Palmer & Peter Bauer and podcast guest Bjorn Stevens (organiser of the summit)

The Berlin Summit initiated an ambitious cycle of planning leading up to the 28th COP.  EVE (Earth Virtualisation Engines) responds to the need to help vulnerable communities and sectors anticipate the consequences of climate change and thereby protect lives and livelihoods.

The Berlin Summit brought together invited participants from across the world to draft a blueprint for EVE, presently envisioned as an international digital infrastructure that exploits the latest advances in information technology (HPC and AI) to establish and maintain a global climate prediction and information system across regional partners or nodes. EVE responds to the need to help vulnerable communities and sectors anticipate the consequences of climate change and thereby protect lives and livelihoods.

  • Climate information for vulnerable sectors and communities

  • Advancing the science to support early warning and adaptation

  • Developing digital infrastructure providing multi-tiered climate information for all

  • Optimal earth-system data integration and monitoring

  • Structure and governance models

POLICY DISCUSSION

June 13th 2023, Czech Banking Association

Focus: (de)globalisation, green energy & digital transition - what is the reality, is it a "just" transition, how to proceed, complete and perhaps action a plan B?

Together with the Czech Banking Association and 30 policy and decision-makers, representatives from think tanks, the private sector and diplomacy. Welcomed by CBA Executive Director Monika Zahalkova and Chief Economist Jakub Seidler, GARI presented findings, visualisations and projections on these topics, followed by opening remarks by Monika Ladmanova, Head of Representation of the European Commission in the Czech Republic.

Our goal was to provide a safe environment for open discussion, and to steer a policy debate around the difficult topics of the twin transition and (de)globalisation and their impact on Europe. This "off the record" format allows everyone present to openly discuss the topics and others to understand perspectives, insights and other information. GARI will be hosting more regular discussions.

N100 2022 online expert panels

In the lead-up to the Symposium (September 21-23, 2022), GARI and its partners convened three interdisciplinary Expert Panels.

The First Panel comprised experts from the five symposium strands who relayed their interpretation of what was going on, their predictions about future events, and, most importantly, the challenges they and their sectors faced.

In the Second Panel, experts from technology, methodology, and foresight "solved" and designed responses and solutions to the challenges presented by the First Panel, drawing from their expertise and perspective.

The Third joint Panel discussed the integration of the challenges and solutions and delved into the abilities and practicalities of applying the proposed solutions. It also addressed issues surrounding the convergence of the two realms represented in the panels (trust, applicability, understandability, and relationship-building between the geopolitical/socio-economic and tech/foresight realm).

The online Expert Panels informed the program of the N100 Symposium.
